Day 23: Energy and Waves Physics Labs #DisneyYouth #Gifted #Write31Days

Today is Day 23 out of 31 Days of my #DisneyYouth #Gifted Series.

***Before I jump into my post for today, want to remind those of you who plan to enter the Create it! Contest that you will still be able to enter until tomorrow night, October 24, 2014. ***

It is super easy to enter! Just send a photo of something that ties in with one of the themes that Disney Youth Programs covers along with your name and email and you are entered. If you look around your classroom or homeschool, your probably have something hanging in your room that ties in with one of the Disney Youth themes. Snap a photo and leave you contact info. in the comments section. That is it! As long as it is something that you created, you can enter it!!! There are going to be some very nice prizes!

Today, want to highlight the various Energy and Waves Physics Labs that Disney has to offer, including 101, 201, & 301 - These levels are for students in grades 3-12.
While at the Disney Youth Media Showcase, we had an awesome overview of what Disney Youth offers with respect to the topics of energy and physics. We even got to do several of the activities that students would get to do in Energy and Physics Lab 101, including taking a behind-the-scenes tour of The Haunted Mansion! It was really interesting and fun! This has to be one of the most popular classes offered!
Was very impressed and the level of knowledge and enthusiasm the Disney Youth Cast Members / Educators expressed for the subject! If a group of gifted students attends any of these Energy and Physics Labs, they will have a blast learning and will most definitely be challenged in their knowledge of all things related to physics and energy. My boys can't wait to take these labs!

Program Overview
Students in grades 3-5 will discover light and sound as forms of energy and how to use them in practical application. In this 3 hour academic adventure young learners will see first-hand how these elements are a vital part of creating world class attractions and how Disney uses these physical properties to entertain and amaze guests from all over the world.
Key Learning Points
During this interactive field study, students will:

  • Discover that sound travels in a compression wave
  • Learn that the medium in which sound travels affects the transmission of the sound wave
  • Learn that the frequency of a sound wave affects what is heard
  • Gain knowledge of the various factors that affect the speed of sound
  • Examine the wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum
  • Learn the parts of a wave, discover that light waves vary in length and make up only a small portion of the Electromagnetic Spectrum
  • Explore how light can be refracted, reflected, and absorbed, as well as manipulated to create illusions and other effects
  • The mystery of The Haunted Mansion® ballroom scene is unlocked as students go behind-the-scenes to discover the science behind the magic
  • Learn that through the knowledge of acoustics, sound can be produced, manipulated, and controlled
  • Discover that optics and light can be manipulated and controlled
  • Come to realize that the brain stores memories and emotions that are associated with specific sounds
  • Discover how Disney Imagineers use the properties of light and sound in designing attractions

    Key Learning Points
During this interactive field study, students will:

    • Define the concepts of a medium, energy and work.
    • Explain the phenomenon of binaural hearing.
    • Describe and demonstrate a compression wave.
    • Articulate and demonstrate how solids, liquids and gases affect sound.
    • Illustrate how white light is composed of different colors.
    • Discuss how different colors of light are made up of different wavelengths.
    • Identify various historical figures and their involvement in specific events in chronological order.
    • Apply a hypothesis through observation, experimentation, the recording of data and the drawing of a conclusion.
    • Compare and contrast refraction and projection.
    • Name the 7 forms of energy and demonstrate the Law of Conservation of Energy.
    • Understand energy types, sources, and conversions and their relationship to heat and light.(Source: #DisneyYouth)
