M5 - More Mileage out of Montessori Math Materials
Well, what can I say but that we are thoroughly enjoying becoming official homeschoolers this year...we have been unofficially homeschooling since birth, but now, it's official with the Sunshine State for Big bro, as he is five.
Big Bro has been getting more and more into bead work...but just felt that we needed to do something a little out of the box and so I came up with some math extensions, using a variety of Montessori math materials, but in a new way...
We took the bead stairs, our number cards, and some dominoes and then, he had to do number sentences with these.
We worked on addition.
Big Bro seemed to like using his color beads along with his dominoes. He had to do the number sentences, so for example, he had to say 5 + 3 = 8 so therefore, 3 + 5 = 8. He showed it with his beads.

Welcome! I may just borrow this idea to use with my 5 yo. He loves dominoes but is so far uninterested in the beads!
Hi Shannon,
Wanted to let you know that this morning, I found a great website that has links to making math mats to work with dominoes. Since you said that your son likes dominoes, these would come in handy:
http://www.mathwire.com/strategies/matsdom.html
Under the links section, I added a link to the main Mathwire.com website, as they have all kinds of other materials that would enhance Montessori math materials. Will do some posts about this during this week:)
Thanks so much! I will definitely check it out. He is really into addition right now!
