Family Fun Photos!

What have we been up to during the dog days of summer? Well, all kinds of things!!!
The boys have been at summer camp this whole week. The camp is in the afternoons every day from 12-3:30 so we still have plenty of time to do things in our home and out and about at the parks and pools.

We have taken a few video clips at summer camp, but since there are so many children there, it would be a challenge to try to contact each family individually to see if they are okay with being on my blog, so have decided to not post the video clips at this time...the boys are having a great time though!
And I have been having fun too. Have been going to Starbucks to get my new favorite summer drink, a Mocha Coconut Frappaccino! These are so delicious! You can order it without the whipped cream and you can cut back on the pumps of the coconut syrup too if you are trying to watch your caloric intake. Totally delicious this way too! Yum!!!
Now, alternating between those and my other stand-by favorite, iced lattes! Works out great though, as the boys go to camp and I can get some things done either right at Starbucks with their free Wi-Fi or else out and about doing errands. Really has worked out great to have them do half day camps this summer! Fun for all!!!

So instead, here are some fun photos of the boys having fun, some are from a week or two ago, some show fun both before and after camp, and some are a few shots that reveal the heat wave we have had here in Florida...
Warming up at 98 degrees F...not including the humidity index...
Little Bro keeping cool in the shade of the cabana at our pool.
Big Bro doing what he loves to do: climbing trees.
Boys playing in the shade underneath the pier at Clearwater Beach
Big Bro playing in the sand and water underneath the pier.
Water toys courtesy Melissa & Doug and Target.
Big Bro and Little Bro are joined by two friends. We gave them a bin filled with coins and they took turns paying and pouring for each other...way too hot to actually stay outside to wait for real customers. Everyone was happy though, as they all got to try a little treat of Kool-Aid, plus they each got  4 quarters to keep! Yay!
Little Bro is now starting to take after Big Bro with a love for climbing.
Crazy hot! 100 degrees F but then with the humidity index, really felt like a furnace!
Little Bro made this for me. "Mom, it's you and daddy"...Ahh...Love, Lego style!
We love all things Lego and are super excited that it is getting closer and closer to Legoland Florida opening, as the park is close to where we live. Can't wait!
Little Bro having a silly fun time!
Big Bro having fun doing a one person puppet show!
Big Bro relaxing after putting a pirate puzzle together. Pirate puzzle courtesy of Melissa & Doug.
Both boys working on a cool water vehicle kit. Can be made into several different types of vehicles and simple machines. Really neat kit, but very tiny photos and directions. Tricky to see / read the directions, especially since Big Bro wears glasses. The boys tried to use the directions as much as they could see, but improvised with some of the steps.
Neat Community Workers lessons to go with Safari Ltd Community Workers Set. The lessons are designed for 5th and 6th grade students, but work fabulously with gifted primary aged students as well. The boys have had a fun time doing these lessons before and after their afternoon camp time. Lesson plan book and Community Workers Set Courtesy Safari Ltd.
Here are the boys with their town that they built to go along with their Safari Ltd Community Workers Set. Thanks Safari Ltd for this wonderful set of Community Workers & lessons
Little Bro is proud to have built such a tall structure! We were so lucky to find these blocks at a consignment store! Both boys love playing with these very sturdy blocks!
Brotherly love...
More fun at our water park to keep cool on hot days...
Fun in the sun and in the water with Daddy!

Have you posted photos of where you live?

If you have, you should link up with Show Us Your Town tomorrow over at Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas!
Linky opens every Friday and Saturday for the summer. It is a fun blog hop, so pop by and Link up if you get the chance.
I plan to link up tomorrow!

Hope that you are having fun in the sun where you live!

Awesome, Artsy, & Active Fun: Structures Project!

When you read my post, you are not going to see a nice art project that you can knock out in a few hours, a day, or even a weekend...this most likely will be an ongoing project that you start and that morphs into something new every few days, once you have the essential project components ready to go...
This is an awesome art project about structures. It involves practical life - sewing, painting, dying fabric, woodworking, and construction. Hopefully, you and your family will enjoy the process of creating as much as they do making the product, but even that can change as your children see fit...
The coolest thing is that the end product is very open ended so the boys can use it and rebuild it again and again into really any sort of structure they wish to create.

Our family structure project started after Thanksgiving of this year and has pretty much carried on in one way or another since then...
We had seen an awesome exhibit all about structure called Skyline at
The Chicago Children's Museum.
What a wonderful museum!
You can find the Chicago Children's Museum on Twitter too!
We were so inspired!
The boys had an absolute blast and did not want to leave!!!

Here are some photos of the boys playing at The Chicago Children's Museum Skyline exhibit:

The boys just loved this exhibit so much, so we set out to make our own version of it at our home.
Dear Hubby and the boys selected the wood, the fabric, and the tools...
Tip: You can usually find child sized tools at local hardware stores.
We found and purchased our tools at Lowes.
Before your child uses the tool, check to see that it fits properly in their hands and is safe and in good working order.

Dear Hubby and the boys worked on creating the wooden building pieces...with Dear Hubby doing most of the labor intensive drilling of the holes and the sanding.
Tip: Always have your child wear goggles when doing woodworking projects. Both boys and Dear Hubby wore them while doing the woodworking, cutting, drilling, and sanding for this project.
Now originally, we thought it would be a nice present for Christmas but it has morphed into an ongoing project and now, the boys help with doing some drilling, sanding, and constructing of the structures.
We all painted the muslin panels to be the "walls for this project".
We did the painting outside on our driveway and used Kool-Aid as the dye.
Tip: Kool-Aid works great as fabric dye!
If you are doing a project that requires dye and you wish to give your children a multi-sensory experience, powdered Kool-Aid packets added to plain water work great!!! Plus, it makes your fabric smell nice as you work!

After working on the wall panels and the beams, the boys were then able to make all kinds of structures, but their favorite seems to be a Vet Clinic and Grooming Station:
Here is the Vet Clinic without the boys inside, so that you can see a bit more of the structure, plus then, a photo of the boys working with one of their friends to build a wall...the structure changes each time they put it together...so it is a very open ended play space...
Well, we put also put a little slide show together showing the boys using the structure as a Vet Clinic and Grooming Station.
Tip: You can do add-ons to the structures, such as pulleys, gears, etc. We added a simple pulley system to ours. You can see it in the slide show clip...
So without further ado...
The stuffed animals were presents from our friends at Melissa & Doug!
Here is a link in case you would like a precious pup for one of your little ones.
They have several breeds of doggies, plus a neat Vet Role play outfit like the one Little Bro is wearing. The boys adore their pups!
Little Bro named his doggie New York (it is a Yorkie).
Big Bro named his doggie Jack, as it is a Jack Russell Terrier.
Their poor little pups always seem to be in need of casts and surgeries, as well as grooming and check ups. The boys are very happy to provide veterinary and grooming care to their canine pals.
Here is a little tip, for those with children who like to put pretend casts on stuffed animals, dolls, or each other:
Mesh shelf liner works great as a cast for role play!
But a pack of the white and cut into strips. Then, show your child how to wrap and then tuck the liner around the patient. It is breathable, so you don't have to worry if they put it on each other...it is easy, as it kind of clings onto itself when you wrap and fold it. You can see the boys using this liner as casts in the slide show...

Well, hope that you will enjoy this post...has lots of arts and crafts elements to it, just not a do-in-a-day project...but if you have little ones who love to do woodworking, painting, and building, plus creative playing, this might be a fun one for your family to try too!

We have had a blast!

Thanks to Bern at Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas and her friends for setting up the neat Sunday Showcase Link-ups. I have included a little write up and links to these lovely blogs in my right side bar under the Sunday Showcase Button...I look forward to getting to know some new bloggers and to see their cool ideas for arts and crafts. How fun!
Plus, if you like this post, please feel free to RT on Twitter or to link to Facebook.

Disclaimer: I was not asked to do any marketing or review of any of the above mentioned places or companies. All opinions are my own. I did choose to provide links though, along with tips, in case anyone else wants to try to do a structures project with their family.

Remember The Golden Rule!

For those of you who are not on Twitter, or for those of you who had other things going on in your lives who were not on Twitter when this situation unfolded, here is a recap and then, my thoughts about it from The Golden Rule's perspective...

Yesterday, someone with a fairly sizable mom blog and Twitter following, who had read a part of a Facebook page from the company Melissa & Doug, decided that she did not like a marketing idea that this company had come up with, but instead of contacting Melissa & Doug directly to discuss her stand on their promotion, she instead took to her blog, blasted this company, and then, started to try to get others to either essentially boycott or petition Melissa & Doug.

Why was she so upset? This woman did not like it that Melissa & Doug had come up with a savvy promotional idea which was namely that a person could round up some followers, and then, that said person could get the opportunity to do a review for Melissa & Doug of one of their products. (The reviewer would also get to keep a nice toy after the review was implied in this post too...)
This was not set up by Melissa & Doug as the ONLY way a person can review their products...it is ONE way...and I might add, a clever one at that...

Now, IMO, proposing this idea like Melissa & Doug did is a good thing, as essentially, it levels the playing field between big bloggers and little ones (or even maybe, possibly a person with a huge Facebook following or a huge circle of friends without a blog, although that idea was not specifically addressed by Melissa & Doug in their FB comments).

Think for a second about this same concept in a different context, a professional sports venue instead of a toy company:
Let's say that you are a baseball team owner and you find out that you have a few choice seats left in a fancy sky box somewhere...
Now, you could just give these said sky box tickets to a big donor who already probably has a sky box of their own, or instead, you could come up with a fun little contest for people to get the chance to come and check out the ball field and the sky box for themselves. Along with them getting to check out the sky box, you are going to give the winner an opportunity to watch a game and then, they will get to do a little write up that will appear in a local paper...not a huge sort of exposure like an article for Sports Illustrated, but a nice local paper that has a section about the pre-season...

So, you say to yourself as said sky box owner...Hmm...wouldn't it be fun if a HUGE fan of our team got the chance to win these tickets and the chance to do a review for us?

You decide to level the playing field by opening it up to all people who meet the criteria that you set forth for this contest...the winner has to be able to get let's say 200 of his or her friends to do a shout out and say Tim sent me to your website! He loves your team practically more than life itself so please choose him as your winner!!!

Some guy who has spent much of his young adult life dying to get the chance to go to a game now has a chance to not only go to a game, but the chance to get to sit and take in the scenery of a sky box, as well as then, to get to do an awesome review that will get published!!!

Some will say, OMG, that is awesome!!!
They will start to round up old college buddies, neighbors, co-workers, Facebook and Twitter friends, friends from church and from their sons' t-ball team, you name it!!! They will go all out to show how much they want to win this opportunity! They realize that an opportunity does not come along every day for the average guy and they want to take a shot at winning!

Now, let's say that a sky box owner from a different sky box gets wind of this and thinks to themselves That is crazy! Why would anyone do such a thing just to get the so-called chance to get to write a review for a small local paper? That other sky box owner is ridiculous!
Not only do I disagree with said promo, I am going to out that person, as now, it is going to set a precedent that anyone with extra sky box tickets is going to have to do such a thing and I am perfectly comfortable with the way things are, as they already put me at a huge advantage over said "Average Joe" guy.

So, then, this sky box owner goes wild and shoots off a huge post on his website and then, goes all out and starts tweeting and then, starts adding things on this other skybox owner's Facebook page. This other skybox owner who is perfectly content in a world that benefits him, then encourages others to do the same, to petition, boycott, and in general, wreck havoc on this other skybox owner...all in the name of "this is unacceptable and I am not going to stand for this marketing pitch"!!! when in reality, the reason that said person may be so rocked is because they do not want things to change for themselves that they now will have to do something similar!!!

But then, they add fake stuff like how they really like the other skybox owner, but feel a duty to slam the person anyway!!!

Then, along come others from the sky box club. They see that one of their own is up in arms about something that benefits them, so very blindly, without taking the time to research anything, or without having the decency to contact the person putting on the promo, they join up and go into attack mode too! They all start saying disparaging comments about how horrible this new-fangled pitch is and that they are totally opposed to it...all the while, not reading about it or finding out how excited some of the Joe Averages are about it!

This scenario would never take place in a sports setting, for many reasons that I won't go into...but hope that it makes things a little more clear as to how things played out yesterday:

Yesterday, someone who claimed to be on friendly terms with Melissa & Doug basically outed them because they came up with a promo that she did not care for, namely because it did not benefit her situation. She is already established, as are the many other bloggers / Twitter folks who jumped to the side of " Let's boycott and / or petition Melissa & Doug"...

Many did it yesterday because other they were blindly led and followed the influence of a bigger blogger / Twitter personality, or else, because as a bigger blogger / Twitter personality, they did not like how this could affect them...how if other companies start to reach out to those with either small blogs or no blogs but loads of alternate friends and family who are willing to come on board to support a company, well then, this could upset the apple cart for them, couldn't it?

All of a sudden, another company might come up with (Oh, No!!!) something creative that provides a smaller blogger a chance to compete with said big dogs of the big blogs...

Then, this blogger / Twitter woman who started all of this added that she really likes Melissa & Doug toys!

Ha! Seriously?!?

You like this company so much that you were willing to cut them to the core without ever contacting them privately to find out their take on this...
You were willing to nearly slam anyone who would actually want to be a part of this promo for a chance to get to do a review for Melissa & Doug, and at the Eleventh Hour, you are professing how much your love their product line, almost making it sound to some like you had no other viable option but to blast them a new one and then, fix the blast with a teeny-tiny bandage?!?

You have got to be kidding me!

Then, the other irony of the day was that one of the people who had the audacity to Tweet about how horrible she thought  it is of Melissa & Doug to do said promo participated in last night's  Melissa & Doug #mdparty Twitter party several hours later!

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

I could not sit back yesterday and watch people blast a company that I feel has integrity, a company that creates lovely toys for young children, a company that I personally know and admire, get blasted from all angles.

Many, many people stayed out and did nothing to show support for this excellent company, and that is their right, but to me, it is just as bad to neglect your duties to speak out when there is something happening that is going against The Golden Rule as it is to outright toss out The Golden Rule and in favor of self serving reasons, spewing hate and rage instead of love and compassion.

The person who did not like how her interpretation of the promo put forth by Melissa & Doug is completely entitled to her opinion...and is even entitled to free speech, provided that she do some fact checking, try to give the company a chance to privately explain things to her, etc. but she did none of those things...

This woman rallied the troops against a great company because it served her needs.
Am sure that she does not want the apple cart to be upset as she is established and would not want to have things change so that maybe she would have to feel like she would have to go and get follows for Melissa & Doug...

But she could have handled it in such a way that her opinion could have been heard privately and respectfully...she could have sent them a detailed, private email outlining her areas of concern instead of creating and promoting a debacle.

Hope that people who were at all a part of this yesterday and this morning, who are still either blindly following without reading or else are acting selfishly because this might threaten them as big bloggers / Twitter folks, will actually would take the time to do some introspection and really reflect upon The Golden Rule, regardless if they are Christian or not...

Am pretty certain that treating others as you would want them to treat you is universal, as everyone likes to be treated in a kind, respectful, compassionate way, regardless of their religious beliefs.

If people do not care for a company's new logo, new promo, new jingle, etc. they are more than welcome to contact said company and tell them their thoughts personally, but that does not mean that they should call for others to sign a petition and essentially boycott the company.

Melissa & Doug issued a Tweet that more or less said that they had changed the wording from their morning Facebook post and apologized for any upset it may have caused. Talk about turning the other cheek! They truly handled themselves in such a dignified, kind, decent way as a company yesterday.

Melissa & Doug added some verbage to explain exactly what their intentions were and to clear up any misconceptions (the misconceptions frankly came from people mis-reading their post, not from the post itself, as I read it and did not have a problem with it and actually, I liked the idea to have a neat promo that would let a person with an even smaller blog than mine to get the chance to get to do neat things with Melissa & Doug like I have had the chance to do!)...

Here is the link to this cool contest they have going on right now.

Really hope that those who were either blindly led or those who were speaking out because said promo would not be advantageous to them personally will revamp their thinking and will reflect on how cool it is when someone who is a huge fan wins something!
If you were one of these people who spoke out yesterday, haven't you ever seen someone who is a huge fan and they get to go and meet their favorite personality, whether it is Paula Deen or Bobby Flay, Oprah or Ellen, Justin Bieber, or iCarly?
You feel so happy for this person! You are so excited for the winner and the winner's family get to spend the day at a taping or live show or just get to hang out with their favorite person.
Even if it is not a show you watch, or a personality that you follow, you feel a sense of happiness for the winner if you see a clip on television showing this person's overflowing joy at winning, right?
You don't feel the need to put down the person, the person's favorite personality, etc. or to start a boycott or petition because the contest that was held either does not interest you or you did not like the contest concept...

Think of this the next time you go to bash a company that comes up with some sort of promotional opportunity that you might not enjoy, but the next person might like to do.

When I go to Chick-fil-A, every once in a while, they have this promotion where if you dress like a cow, you can get a free meal. Some people think it is fun to dress up like a cow and go all out and earn a free sandwich. Other people, while they may admire those in costume, do not feel like dressing up, as they are shy and would feel funny in a " moo moo" in public...

But instead of the ones who don't wear costumes petitioning Chick-fil-A for this promotion, they get to watch and possibly live vicariously through the less shy / fully costumed folks, who are having a ball wearing black and white splotchy gear, complete with pink utters, eating their free meal, as they themselves pay for their nuggets and fries.

I am purposely mentioning Chick-fil-A not because I have any endorsements from them but because they do fun promotions and they get and live by The Golden Rule, much as I believe Melissa & Doug does, too...

If you believe in The Golden Rule and think that it was not right how things played out yesterday and again early this morning on Twitter, please pop over to either the Melissa & Doug website , their blog, their Facebook account, or Twitter account, @MelissaAndDoug and tell them how you feel.

I have had many personal dealings with this company, as a customer, a reviewer, a Twitter party host, and a Twitter party attendee, so in some ways, it was difficult for me to see how quickly people were to back them when my experience with them has been very positive...
Everyone at Melissa & Doug treat those around them like family or dear friends.
They get The Golden Rule and really live by that in their company's mission and vision.

The Awesome, The Good, the Bad, The Ugly: Customer Service 101

Saturday night, right before we were putting the boys to bed, I happened to see a Tweet by
Ted Rubin:
When a shopper refers 2 "my store," she means a merchant who knows her tastes & suggests products she loves.

As I was laying there trying to get the boys to fall asleep, it kept coming back through my head, as Ted hit the nail on the head with this one...

True not only for stores, but also for restaurants, salons, and anything that really involved customer service. So I tweeted back to Ted, mentioning that this is true for not only stores but for salons, restaurants, etc. and that people like to feel special. Ted agreed, tweeting back "Yes"!

Well, it really got me thinking about how earlier on Saturday, I had driven twenty-five minutes to have my hair done at an Aveda-affiliated salon by my favorite hair stylist at Sage Salon & Spa...
Stacy does a fab job with cutting my hair, but also, she makes the visit fun and makes her customers feel special...she remembers her clients when they come in, asking them how things are going with them. Stacy remembers minute details from previous visits. She also keeps track of the color(s) and cut(s) she has done for me in the past. Could go to loads of salons that are closer, but I choose to go to her, as just like the "my store" idea, this is "my salon"...

Then, thought about where I go for coffee several times a week. There are four Starbucks that are reasonably close to my home but generally, I choose to go to a particular one that is inside of our Super Target store: Target #1382 / Starbucks #72660. The workers there are awesome! Some of them know my name, my boys' names, what we generally order, and so on. Ashley, one of the baristas, even asks the boys about what they are studying in our homeschool! She is friendly and really gives customers the sense that she cares how you are doing and how your day is going.
All of the baristas at the Starbucks inside the Super Target store are polite, kind, and make you feel happy that you chose to come to them for your cup o' Joe.
I asked them who trains them and was told by Allyson, one of the nice people that works at this Starbucks, that they get training both by Target and Starbucks.
Kathy who is the manager there also indicated that they get a great deal of training and mentioned Vincent Cook from Starbucks and Richard Jablonski from Target.
Not sure exactly how the combination of training works, but boy, is it effective!
Let me tell you, it is a winning combination of training.
A real role model for others!
What makes it interesting to go there is that you see people that are pleasantly surprised at first that these baristas remember their customers like they do...they say hello and in many cases, get your drink started as you wait in line. I happened to get to speak with the two baristas and the manager there, but they are all fabulous and truly seem to enjoy their work.

Then, enter the realm of the homeschool market. There is a huge spread of how companies treat homeschool families.
Some companies really cater to homeschool families. They get that a family does not need 12 or 16 of something. They get that a family does not need to hear why children should be in a real school for the purposes of socialization. They get that families do not want a lecture about leaving certain such things to professionals. These stellar companies also get that there are many, many reasons for homeschooling children.
Some awesome companies take business from the homeschool market just as seriously as if it was a school system purchasing these items. They get to know their base of homeschool customers on a much more personal basis.
One that is awesome at getting homeschoolers and making them feel special:
Karen at A Montessori Marketplace. Karen does all that she can to practically bend over backwards to be helpful to their customers. She is so personable, professional, and kind. Much, although not all, of her business is from homeschoolers.
If you are on Twitter or Facebook, be sure to follow @yiayiamama (Karen Tyler on FB).
She treats you like family when you call, is extraordinarily helpful, and goes out of her way to help you with getting the materials your family needs at a very reasonable price.
Karen returns phone calls and emails, and in general, she make the experience of dealing with them a nice one.
Cannot say enough positive things about Karen!
She attended the #montecamp Twitter party, even though Karen's hometown was under a tornado warning. Karen still attended all that she could before and after the warning.

How's that for dedication???

She added to the fun feel of the #montecamp Twitter party. They helped to welcome everyone like greeters do when you go to church. Really was nice of her to do that...
If she had an actual storefront, A Montessori Marketplace would be on "my store" list...but even though she doesn't  have actual storefronts, I still feel that she is "my store", albeit online.

It is Karen's birthday today, so if you pop by her website or check her out on Twitter, be sure to wish her a happy birthday!!!

Then, there are some wonderful companies that do not specifically cater to the homeschool market, but totally get homeschool families and have tons of super products that work great within the framework of homeschooling.
There are two standouts that would also be on "my store"or "my company" list...
These companies are truly top notch with their customer service and their product lines, namely:
Melissa & Doug and Safari Ltd.
Our family has purchased many products from both of these awesome companies.
Generally, we purchase their products through local stores that carry their products, but since it is such a pleasure to deal with these companies, for future purchases, I would consider buying straight from them instead of through local stores that carry their products. Either way, I feel like they are "my companies"...I will always have brand loyalty to them for how both how personal and how personable they are.
We love their product lines but we also love how they treat their customers!
What has really made these two companies leap off the pages is getting to know them via Twitter and Facebook.
If you are on Twitter or are on Facebook, and sign to follow or like these companies, you will start to see messages that they direct to you. You feel like they know you and get you. They are very personable on Twitter and Facebook. It is no wonder that MelissaAndDoug has a FB giveaway going on set up to celebrate each time they reach a new milestone of 1,000 more customers, along with a prize for everyone when they reach 100,000. Melissa & Doug give out prizes for these milestones, but really, they care about each and every one of their followers along the way to their goal of 100,000. If you decide to follow them, please tell them that I sent you if readin this made you go check out them on FB.
It is not just one or two people at Melissa & Doug, it is the whole company's ethos / mantra / etc. to treat people in such a personable way. I have interacted with Melissa, Christine, MJ, Chris, and Doris and literally every single one of these people are as nice as the next person at Melissa & Doug! They all seem to actually enjoy their jobs and are committed  to helping those who connect with their company.

Have no doubt whatsoever that Melissa & Doug will reach their 100,000 followers goal, because anyone who has children or anyone who likes to buy presents for children would want to follow Melissa & Doug if they would know what I know about their company...how they are so genuine, so hard working, so caring, so passionate about providing quality products for little ones, the list goes on and on...but then, the icing on the cake is that they call you by name and take the time to get to know you personally when you get to know them on Twitter and Facebook.

Melissa & Doug and Safari Ltd. truly get the concept of social media and see the value in making connections with people through social media. Both companies get a great deal of business from homeschool families, as in many cases, both Melissa & Doug and Safari Ltd have excellent quality items that are more affordable than some of their competitors' products, plus then, phenomenal customer service on top of well-priced items just makes them shine.

Had the pleasure of working with both of these companies in the course of doing the #montecamp giveaway. They returned phone calls and emails, they agreed to ship out prize packs to the winners, and then, they sent Tweets of support before, during, and after the Twitter party.

If someone wants to see how to do social media right so that their followers feel special, follow Melissa & Doug and Safari Ltd., as they not only get it...they are setting the bar for others to get it...
Not-so-social companies should take note of how to be personable on Twitter, Facebook, but also via phone and email from these two leaders...

Whatever these Melissa & Doug and Safari Ltd.  are doing in terms of customer service and social media, it is working very well...

When I was so nervous about doing my first Twitter party, Wendy and Norma @SafariLtd sent some very kind reassuring DM tweets and emails to me and then, did public replies saying how excited they were about the party.

Both Safari Ltd. and Melissa & Doug knew that we were going out of town and so lo and behold, Safari Ltd. mailed their package of beautiful figures and great lesson plans for our family out right before we left for our trip and Melissa & Doug actually sent something fun and fab to us while we were at our hotel.

How's that for awesome???

During the Twitter party, right when I was super focused on keeping track of my Tweets so as to not end up in "Twitter jail" as well as the order of the trivia questions I had prepared with a list of winners as they answered the trivia questions, along pops up @MelissaAndDoug, interjecting some fun questions about kids jokes and folks' plans for the weekend. @Melissa & Doug had a wonderful #montecamp Twitter party presence.

It totally made the #montecamp Twitter party relaxed and happy!

Am starting to get to know Larry from Shiller Math and Leanne from My Personalized Print.
Am also getting to know Luke and the crew from Sonlight.

These three seem to care for their customer base as well, and seem to get the homeschool market too...
Larry and Leanne both were very quick to ship out lovely materials to our family.

Similar to Melissa & Doug, Safari Ltd., A Montessori Marketplace, and Montessori Print Shop, the items that Shiller Math and My Personalized Print sent us were of high quality and design.
On a follow-up call with Leanne from My Personalized Print about the giveaway and #montecamp Twitter party prize winners, we got into talking about education as a whole, about how her mom is a teacher and how I used to be a classroom teacher...things that might not directly relate with place mats but that do relate to building rapport with a customer and product reviewer.
My Personalized Print plans to come out with a whole line of personalized products, so if I need an item that I would like to have personalized either for my boys or for friends or family, they will be "my company" for these items.

Not all companies give off the sentiment that they want to be your go-to company, believe me, especially when you are a homeschool family.

Whether it is how they treat you via Facebook, Twitter, via email, phone,  or in person, when you are in their store or at their booth at a conference, some companies do not care for homeschoolers.

They are the antithesis of the "my store" concept that Ted Tweeted about...they don't make you feel special, they instead make you feel awkward and try to out you for homeschooling or that you are a charity case, that you are not truly "a paying customer"...

I have worked with companies in the capacity of doing reviews and giveaways, as well as in the capacity of being their actual customer. Mostly the experiences have been quite positive, but some...Well, hmm...so it has been a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly...

A few years back, I attended a conference that was not directed at homeschoolers but that was education related and actually brought the boys to the vendors hall to see the products for sale, as we were just getting into homeschooling.
We paid for the conference and paid to use the facilities at the hotel. We came as a family so it was not a small undertaking. I turned out to be the only homeschool mom at this entire conference, even though it had been publicized that homeschool families were most welcome. Unlike the majority of people at the conference, we paid for the conference ourselves. It was not a cost picked up for us like the majority of the education-related folks who were there.
Dear Hubby and I wanted the boys to help select some of the wonderful materials that were on display from this conference, as we value their input about their learning. So we had decided, in advance, that we would spend several hundreds of dollars to buy materials at the conference from these vendors, as long as we felt that they were items we would love to have in our homeschool...

The Good
One company at this conference who stood out as being kind and personable was Laughing Star Montessori. Susan, who owns the company, asked my children how they enjoyed their work, and then, as we were perusing the materials, she showed us some of her materials and actually showed them directly to my sons and to me, as she gets that we intentionally had brought our sons in to be a part of the selection process. We ordered several materials from Susan that day.
Our purchases from her on that day have been extraordinarily useful to the boys throughout the last two years of homeschooling.
What also was super nice is that Susan heard the boys talk about how we were going to go on a Carribean cruise shortly thereafter...she sent us away with a fabulous free gift, an awesome set of cards all about Sea Life in the Carribean!
We bought several of her products but that day was also the start of forming a great relationship with Susan and subsequently her son, Will, from Laughing Star Montessori.
Susan has yet to dive into social media but she has a great family run company, truly connects with her customers, and is a wonderful person with fantastic resources for homeschoolers.
Some of her items include: woodworking books, a whole unit study on Antarctica, complete with a handcrafted knobbed puzzle of Antarctica, and really unique copywork type books to have a child work on his or her handwriting.

The Bad
On the flip side of our great connection with Susan at this conference, there was a company there who had just nice things, but such lousy interpersonal skills, that it was a total turnoff...
This company's representative also happened to be the owner. This person initially was happy to see that my sons were engaged in looking at the company's wares.
This business owner showed the boys different items but this was all the while this person assumed that my children attended a "real school". As soon as this person realized that my sons were homeschooled, the tune changed and comments started about how this or that item was designed specifically for in-class use, by trained professionals...(never mind that I am a trained professional and that if things were different, I had fully planned to open my own private Montessori-inspired preschool back when we lived in Virginia. Never mind that we have very strong reasons for homechooling and that at the moment, it is really our only viable option...)
This business owner went from wanting to feature my sons in their advertising (yes, my little boys are quite cute) to this person suggesting that I look elsewhere, as these items were intended for classroom use...

If anyone has ever seen the movie, Pretty Woman, there is a scene where the lead character of the movie, Julia Roberts, walks into a very high-end boutique sort of store. She is completely looked down upon by the store owners and treated very poorly, to say the least.

Well, unfortunately, sometimes, when you homeschool your children, people give you that same sort of disgusted look, the look that makes it clear that they do not want you to even consider purchasing their items or perusing their store...or even ordering from them online...

The Ugly
Have had several very notable reactions that fall under this category...the one at the conference to start, plus a few others...
One was stands out as the most "ugly" of interactions...
Occurred a couple years ago at a home party where a person had made up and was selling their own line of organic cleaning products. Had been invited by an acquaintance to attend this home party.
Mind you, this acquaintance knew we homeschooled our sons and she actually was contemplating homeschooling hers as well...
I had fully intended to not only purchase several of the organic cleaning products, and was actually all set to provide free word of mouth and actual advertising on my blog for this person, as I thought it was neat that she was a start-up business and made her own product line. The creator of the organic products line was reasonably friendly but when she found out that my family homeschooled our sons, she turned into a completely different person, and went off on a tirade about how it is just horrible that a family would homeschool their children, and extra awful that I would do it, considering that I was a former classroom teacher. She said it was akin to a doctor operating on themselves or their family. This woman said  something along the lines of
In absolutely no circumstances would a doctor ever, ever operate on themselves nor on family members, and to boot, that a doctor would never be okay with having others who claim to be in the field who assist with such a thing...that to do such a thing, even in the most dire of circumstances, would be in violation of the Hippocratic Oath.
What made all of this so incredibly ironic was that it was right around the time when Dr. Jerri Nielson Fitzgerald had passed away.

Dr. Jerri Nielson Fitzgerald had diagnosed herself (as having breast cancer) when she was the only doctor working at the National Science Foundation's Amundsen-Scott Station in 1999.
The station was cut off from the world due to severe weather, so Dr Nielson was forced to treat herself using a machinist and a welder, and anti-cancer drugs which were delivered to her in a dangerous US Air Force air drop.
She also trained a small group of non-medical colleagues to help with her treatment and followed the advice of doctors via satellite link. Source: ABC News. Here is a link to the full story.

Dr. Jerry Nielson Fitzgerald did not die because she had to do her own procedures or because she had to use non-medical colleagues to assist her. She lived for another ten years after the procedure had been completed. Dr. Jerry Nielson Fitzgerald did the best that she could with the circumstances she had been given.

In many respects, that is why some, including us, do homeschool: due to specific circumstances, it is the best we can do at a particular time. Our family does not homeschool to be different, we are doing it because it is the best we can do for our sons under our own particular circumstances. We might not be stranded in Antarctica, but we certainly have had hings thrown at us that make it the only viable option for an excellent education for our children.

Have not checked to see if this person's organic cleaning products business is still in existence, but would suspect that it is not, as there are many, many fine homeschooling families who would be totally turned off if they happened to be present at a home party where this woman would most likely again launch into her feelings of total resentment and hostility towards homeschoolers.

Making connections is what people generally want from a business. People who are potential customers or potential partners for promotions, giveaways, and reviews want to feel like the company gets you, know you, and believes in you.

With social media taking off like it is doing, some companies better start to take a BIG CLUE from the companies doing things right, or the ones who do not will inevitably fail.

People do not like doing business with companies who treat them in a less than stellar way.

Hope that someone reads this and will reflect upon how they treat their customers, how personal and personable they are, and how they make their customers feel welcome.

Well, that's it for today...

Was not asked to do this blog post, nor was I endorsed for it. I have been a customer of all of the companies I have mentioned, have reviewed some materials from some of the companies I have mentioned, and have worked in the capacity of Twitter party hostess and giveaway partner for some of them as well.
Wrote this blog post based upon my personal reflection of Ted Rubin's Tweet that subsequently got me to think about my own personal experiences with different companies and the ones that treat you special versus the ones who do not...

Parks & Puzzles: An Overview, A Review & A Lil Somethin' Extra for Tomorrow's Giveaway #9 !

Today turned out to be an interesting day, totally not what we had thought we would be doing with our day, but it was a fun one, to be certain. Well, since Big Bro was sans his glasses for all of today, we did several read-alouds, some auditory games, and then, loads of time playing outside...we even made our way to two different parks today...and each boy went through about three outfits, as it was cooler and foggy in the morning, but then, warmed up as we were playing at the park...but then, the boys were all dirty and sweaty from playing outside...so loads of laundry from one day, but all well worth it...

Then, after we had been home for a bit, when I had gone out to get something from the van, we discovered a huge box waiting for us at our front door...and it came to us from Melissa & Doug!
Yippie!!!

We opened it up and let me tell you, Big Bro and Little Bro were so psyched to see the package.
First, they had a ball popping the bubble wrap, as the package was so well protected.
Then, as they were playing with the bubble wrap, I read two notes from Melissa & Doug. One was nicely typed on cute stationary and was kind of a standard thanks for your comment letter...but a very sincere letter, to be certain. Then, attached was a personal little note from one of the wonderful people at Melissa & Doug. thought that it was a very nice touch to get a personal note back from them.
Well, after I was smiling from reading the nice notes, and the boys were smiling from having a ball hopping up and down on the bubble wrap, we all  happily opened the items inside the box...some wonderful puzzles...how fun!
We were so happy to get this package from Melissa & Doug.
Over the years, we have purchased and have used many Melissa & Doug products, including the following ones:
Various Wooden Puzzles (Hands, Pets, Zoo, Farm, Numbers) and Wire Racks
Farm Animals (Such a cute fuzzy set in a wooden barn shaped box, but I could not find the link on their current website...awesome item though)
Wooden Stringing Vehicle Beads in a Box (could not find a link to this on their current website...but again, a cool product)

A few weeks ago, I had contacted Melissa & Doug's Customer Service Department with a suggestion.
Then, had the pleasure of getting to speak with a couple different folks at Melissa & Doug. They seemed so happy to hear from me and really appreciated my feedback. As a thank you for my suggestions, they sent me the awesome puzzles package we received in the mail today...
Our family loves all of the other Melissa & Doug toys we have, both the ones we have purchased as well as the ones Melissa & Doug sent to us today.

The package they sent to us included the following puzzles:

Well, we were thrilled to have received such a nice package!

The pirate puzzles are interesting to the boys, as they both enjoy playing with various pirate themed toys.

Big Bro worked on the Pirate's Bounty Floor Puzzle, which is a very nice, thick, sturdy cardboard puzzle. For this puzzle, a child can use the puzzle box as the control of error as they are trying to put the puzzle pieces together. This puzzle proved to be both challenging and fun for Big Bro, probably a little extra challenging, as he put the puzzle together without wearing glasses (as his are broken at the moment).
Little Bro sat on his seat and worked on the Pirate Adventure Jigsaw Puzzle. This puzzle comes in a neat wooden tray. The wooden pieces are very sturdy and colorful. There is not a printed image of the completed puzzle underneath the pieces, so it is pretty challenging for a four year old. But Little Bro was determined to complete it and was able to successfully do it and was very proud of completing the puzzle, to say the least! Most likely, I will take a photo and blow it up as a control of error chart for him so that he will have that to refer to the next time he builds this neat puzzle, as he enjoyed it very much, but really seemed to want to have something to use to refer to while completing the puzzle.

All in all, we could not be happier with the generosity and professional response to our suggestion that we had sent them and think that it speaks volumes that they sent a nice letter and care package to show us their appreciation. This is what you want from a company...one that backs their products and takes into consideration what a longtime customer and her family suggest.

Update:
The giveaway that originally went with this post has ended. The winner was notified and has been sent their item. All comments from the giveaway have been deleted and the comments are now closed for this post. Thank you for your interest.
