Day 13: Fundamentals of Photo Storytelling #DisneyYouth #Gifted #Write31Days

Today’s post is Day 13 out of a 31 Day Series on Disney Youth Programs and how well they work for gifted students.
Fundamentals of Photo Storytelling sounds like a very cool, hands on class where students get the opportunity to discover a variety of  techniques and tools so that they can take dynamic photos.

Since this is one of the classes that I did not get to experience first-hand, here is what
Program Overview
With Epcot® as the subject, students in grades 7-12 will learn the how to capture images that tell a story. In this 3-hour program they will learn to observe with their creative lens and practice photography techniques that connecting people, places and events. This program was developed in conjunction with Jostens, a leader in celebrating and sharing memorable occasions.
Key Learning Points
During this interactive field study, students will:
  • Develop their creative eye and learn what elements make for an impactful photograph.
  • Analyze photographic images using artistic and technical criteria.
  • Distinguish between images that are more impactful and less impactful using artistic and technical criteria.
  • Examine how their experience and skills will influence how they use photographs to tell stories that connect people, places and events.
  • Discuss the connection between visual storytelling and captioning in photos and other media.
  • Identify the elements of an effective caption and develop captions using those elements.
  • Learn how to take field notes that capture elements of the story not present in the photograph.

Please note: Students are required to provide their own cameras.

All programs subject to availability. Program content, times, attractions and locations subject to change due to inclement weather, availability or group dynamics. Students must meet minimum age/grade requirements.

One thing that I can address related to this class is the statement that Disney Youth makes regarding students meeting age/ grade requirements in order to participate
This is actually fabulous if you have a gifted student!

Why?

Because if you are a middle school to high school aged gifted student who is fascinated with photography, you do not want to have someone show up with a toddler.

As funny as that may sound to some, when you homeschool like our family does, so many times this happens: a family shows up with a tiny tot who they have decided should just tag along...and that tag along tot becomes a huge distraction as the program was not designed to meet the developmental needs of a toddler. When you are paying to have an amazing learning experience for your older child, it is pretty frustrating when this happens.
Even if a child is profoundly gifted, parents, guardians, and teachers should not think that will fly with Disney Youth for a considerably younger child to tag along and attend a wonderful Disney Youth Program meant for older students.

Why is this a good thing for gifted students?

Because from what I witnessed about Disney Youth Educators is that they are AMAZING at being able to differentiate instruction (content and process), so they can have students who are in the same chronological age range and can appropriately challenge all learners who attend.
It gives gifted students a chance to be with chronological peers while at the same time, their intellectual curiosity and passion for a particular subject will be encouraged.
The other issue is for the child's safety.
Since the Disney Youth Programs are specifically designed for a particular age range, some classes participate in rides that have a height requirement. (So, for example, a two to six year old  may not meet height requirements for a particular ride, etc. that is part of a class meant for a middle school / high school aged student.)

My husband and I are absolutely thrilled that Disney Youth Programs have a policy in force and that they politely but firmly enforce it.
I specifically asked Disney Youth Educators about their age / grade guidelines and they explained that they do hold to the policy of not permitting children who are too young for their age requirements for a program to tag along for programs.
This is awesome news, even though that means that my boys are currently too young to take Fundamentals of Photo Storytelling. They will get to do it when they are older.
This class sounds like it would be great and when BOTH of my sons are old enough to take this Fundamentals of Photo Storytelling, I would LOVE for them to attend!
My Dear Hubby can't wait for them to be old enough to attend, as he loves photography and would enjoy chaperoning their group.
Have set up a Fundamentals of Photo Storytelling Board, so if your group attends this class and you would like to be invited to pin to this board, please feel free to contact me so that I will be able to invite you to add pins to this board. Since my boys are too young to attend this class, would love it if you attend or if you have attended this, if you will please help add pins to this Fundamentals of Storytelling board.
